Okami

Okami on the PS2

Another creative and groundbreaking game from Capcom who seem to be pushing videogames more forward, actively than any other company in recent years. This adventure game by Clover Studios (Viewtiful Joe) follows a Japanese folk tale playing as the God of Sun Amaterasu, who descends to Earth in the form of wolf to seal the demons. While utilising a graphical engine, emulating traditional Japanese artwork, it creates a unique visually rich world not seen in modern videogames where ultra realism is seen to be cutting edge. I hope other publishers and developers take note because you do not need millions upon millions of polygons to create a beautiful game.

Release date is expected to be around April 20, 2006 for Japan and May 31, 2006 for the USA. No news on a European release date as of yet.

  1. Atreu Cell says:

That game does indeed look great, and your comment about ultra realism reminds me of a comment made recently by Yu Suzuki - “Reality is not really a goal of mine, no. Reality in the context of games is nonsense. If it’s completely realistic, then what’s the point? What’s so entertaining about the usual and the mundane bits of life? What is more important is believability within the game itself.”

And this from the man who was in charge of one of the most realistic racers ever (Ferrari 355 Challenge).

Also, Capcoms Okami reminds me of a simple maxim - The best ideas are the ones that seem SO obvious once they are realised.

Here’s hoping more developers try something different every now and again and use all that graphical power to create something artistically stimulating as opposed to ‘realism for the sake of it’.
